The iPhone 17e is Apple's latest entry level iPhone. It's basically an iPhone 17 with a slightly reduced feature set and a slightly smaller screen.
The most significant difference between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17e for many people will be the price. The iPhone 17 is £200 more expensive than the iPhone 17e. The 17e is sold at the price Apple previously sold its predecessor, the 16e. This is excellent value since the 17e has an improved specification and also twice the memory of the 16e.
So what compromises do you have to accept if you choose an iPhone 17e? The phones have very similar specifications and many buyers will probably be happy with the slightly reduced features of the iPhone 17e especially blind and low vision users who don't need the ultimate in graphical games performance or the latest camera features.
Here's a list of the main differences.
The iPhone 17e has a 6.1 inch diagonal screen and the iPhone 17 has a 6.3 inch diagonal screen.
The iPhone 17e is available in three colours. The iPhone 17 is available in 5 colours.
The iPhone 17e has a 4 core Graphics Processing Unit. The iPhone 17 has a 5 core GPU. The iPhone 17 should have better, smoother, graphics performance for games players.
The iPhone 17e lacks the iPhone 17's camera control button. User reaction to this button, which gives quick access to some camera features, has been mixed but it may be helpful for blind photographers who use VoiceOver.
The iPhone 17 has a dual camera system with better zoom capabilities; it has a 48 megapixel main camera and a 48 megapixel wide angle camera. The iPhone 17e doesn't have the wide angle camera. Instead it has a single, "2 in 1", 48 megapixel main camera that offers 2 times cropped zoom. Both the iPhone 17 and 17e produce what Apple calls super high resolution photos at both 24 and 48 megapixels. Both phones will provide high resolution images for analysis by apps like SeeingAI and Be My Eyes. The cropped 2 times zoom on the 17e will provide less detailed images than the 17 for low vision users who use the iPhone camera app as a visual aid for distance work. If you want to do this I suggest you try both models in store to check just how significant the difference is. The iPhone 17e doesn't have a macro feature for close-up photos but I doubt that will be an issue for blind users. Low vision users may have uses for macro photography. I expect that SeeingAI on an iPhone 17e will behave as well as it does on a 16e and was pleasantly surprised to discover that on a 16e the app could speak text accurately even when I held the phone very close to the text. I wouldn't normally advocate holding the phone so close, but it was interesting that the lack of the macro feature didn't seem to cause a problem here.
The dynamic island is present only in the iPhone 17. This is an area near top centre of the screen which can display time sensitive alerts from some apps and some Apple alerts. It's called dynamic because its shape is adjusted to fit the current alert. On the iPhone 17e these alerts will turn up as notifications or banners at the top of the screen. I have dynamic island on my iPhone 17 Pro and haven't found it very useful. Others may disagree but it's certainly not essential.
Apple quotes a battery life of up to 30 hours of video playback on the iPhone 17 and 26 hours on the iPhone 17e.
Early reports suggest that AirTag precision finding is available only on the iPhone 17. This feature can direct you to a nearby AirTag. The iPhone 17e can give the approximate location of an AirTag and play a sound on the AirTag to help locate it.
